Special Needs Advocacy

Awareness of Cornelia de Lange syndrome and autism, inclusion for people of every ability, and support for the families who care for them.

Why This Cause

A lifelong commitment, made personal

Kellie Lightbourn has championed people with special needs for decades. As the mother of a son with Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) and autism, she understands both the challenges families face and the extraordinary joy and strength found within them.

As Mrs. Universe®, she uses her title to carry that message further — in Stuart, across the Treasure Coast, and wherever her year of service takes her.

The Platform

Three pillars of service

I

CdLS & Autism Awareness

Cornelia de Lange syndrome is a rare genetic condition that can affect physical growth, development and behavior. Autism is a developmental condition that shapes how a person communicates and experiences the world. Mrs. Lightbourn works to build understanding of both, so that families are met with knowledge rather than uncertainty.

II

Inclusion

Every person deserves to belong. Mrs. Lightbourn encourages schools, employers, faith communities and public spaces to welcome individuals of all abilities and to recognize each person’s unique gifts.

III

Family Support

Parents and caregivers carry a great deal. Drawing on her experience as a mother and an attorney, Mrs. Lightbourn speaks to families about finding community, information and the confidence to advocate for their children.
